Ability Workshops

Autism Ability Advocates, Inc. has three Ability Workshops that take place in the community and virtually. They include ArtAbility, GardenAbility, and YogAbility. These are inclusive programs designed for ALL abilities, and provided at low to no cost.

The workshops are mainly hands-on, and filled with activities that encourage our participants to be self-expressive and make choices. We also make a point to present our activities in a way that will boost self-esteem and end in success. Social time is included to encourage friendships and healthy snacks are introduced to enhance wellness.

During these workshops we make efforts to make as many individualized accommodations and modifications as necessary. These accommodations can include the use of weighted blankets, visual directions, or simply turning down the lights.

All participants go home with everything they create during the workshop, as well as a bag full of treats, products, and/or materials that enable them to further their learning and enjoyment once at home or out in the community. Such items have included AeroGardens, hydroponic systems, canvases with art supplies, and yoga socks!

Ability Awareness

Autism Ability Advocates, Inc. advocates for “Ability Awareness”. Ability Awareness is when you recognize the abilities of ALL individuals, especially those with physical, mental, social, and developmental challenges.

We help fund self-advocacy efforts that spread the message of Ability Awareness. Spreading the message can take the form of gifting or selling items that are hand-crafted with assistance from special needs individuals, attending arts and crafts fairs with resources that carry the message of Ability Awareness, and any other way we can let others know that ALL people are worthy and capable of being productive citizens and community members.

IHHOPE

In 2004, when Autism Ability Advocates, Inc. was founded, we started our IHHOPE program. IHHOPE stands for Independence, hope and happiness through ongoing professional education. These are collaborative workshops on up-to-date and innovative autism interventions. We include parents, community members, teachers, and other professionals in these workshops.

Topics have included Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions, Biological Interventions, Visual Supports, and Picture Exchange Communication Systems. These are just a few of the hundred or more support groups and workshops we have coordinated.
